Born an Iowa native, I learned to fish about the time I learned to ride a bike. I spent my youth wandering creek beds, exploring timber, building tree branch forts, and observing how our native harvest cycle effects much of the rural Iowa culture. Today I can’t say much has changed except I can now share my love for the outdoors and a deep connection to the balance and movement of nature with my three children and amazing wife. My draw has always been to fishing or as John Buchan noted “a perpetual series of occasions for hope”. About 20 years ago I picked up a fly fishing rod and have gradually devolved into a self-proclaimed trout bum. My friends or my 10yr old twin sons know when I say it’s time for a iowatroutbum trip it means long drives into the night, sleeping in the back of the jeep, and greeting the sun on the shore of an obscure Midwest tail water. I am passionate in my pursuit of fly fishing and greatly enjoy sharing my learned experience with friends and family. I am equally passionate about exploring new opportunities and find Iowa to be a hidden treasure with opportunities to catch and release most species of fresh water fish with a fly rod.
In pursuit of a trout bum lifestyle, many luxuries of typical fishing trips are abandoned but I will not compromise on using quality gear. Ranulph Fiennes states “there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing”, I couldn’t agree more. Active Endeavors plays an important role in outfitting my lifestyle and offering top quality clothing and equipment that endures the rigors of daily living and spontaneous adventures.
As a small business owner, I appreciate the depth of community that ties itself to a business’s vision. When I am helping individuals uncover or connect with their Authentic self as a health care provider or creating unique leather goods as an artesian, my passion for connecting with others is carefully tended, much like I observed within my farming heritage.
